Senators pursue reconciliation

A group of 20 elected and appointed senators is preparing to propose the establishment of an Upper House committee to help bring about national reconciliation.

Uthai Thani senator Singchai Thungthong said the proposal would be made to Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanich.

Mr Singchai said the panel would be responsible for studying the impact of the political rallies and subsequent violence at the Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok in 2010.

    "Thailand does not need reconciliation, it needs rule of law and full democracy."

    These are NOT mutually exclusive; Thailand needs both!

    'Reconciliation' isn't something that can be accomplished by legislation. There are 4 possible options to bring about real reconciliation;
    1. A war, which'll unite all Thai people against a common enemy.
    2. The 'passing away' of fugitive Thaksin, the man who has done more to divide this nation than anyone else.
    3. Thaksin turning himself in to serve his 2 year prison sentence, and his apology for his crimes.
    4. A new political party arises that diminishes the influence of PT and the Dems, and brings about the necessary reforms that Thailand needs.

    I don't want to see a war. I'd like to see option #4

    "Mr Singchai said he believed the Senate panel would be another way to provide justice to all sides."

    I remember the anthem of the USA ('left') on many shirts & bumper stickers: "No Peace without Justice."

    The problen is, can there be 'justice' within amnesty? If not, sadly Thailand will not get much needed reconcilliation.

    Reconciliation is about mending the nation as a whole, not about freeing some prisoners from one protest. This is just another one sided whohah.

    Reconciliation isnt something you just decide on .It will take time .Granting amnesty just frees criminals .Nothing needs to be done except for people who broke the law to go to court and jail .Everyone else get over it and learn from your mistakes .

    reconciliation does not mean giving amnesty to those convicted people, or not punishing those who commit crimes against the state. Reconciliation can just be mending or fixing your differences for the common good.

    Does not include the leaders. That's a way to keep Thaksin out of it. surely it should include everybody.
