Anti-corruption spirit needed

Independent organisations alone will never be able to eradicate corruption if Thai people themselves do not embrace the fight, say crusaders for good governance.

A strong opposition to corruption needs to be implanted in all Thai people from childhood, said Vicha Mahakhun, a member of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

"We cannot just inject the sense of responsibility not to be corrupt in adulthood," he said on Friday at a seminar marking 15 years of independent organisations arising from the 1997 constitution.

A "poll" last year indicated that 67 % of Thais condoned, if not outright approved, corruption. It may turn things around a bit if those offering bribes are punished as well as those accepting same. In the U.S., most states,if a police officer is offered a bribe to avoid a citation or arrest, the officer will issue the original citation and arrest you for attempting to bribe him, ( a felony )! If he doesn't and takes the bribe, is caught, he loses job, benefits, and indicted for accepting a bribe but, this is Thailand.

How are PEOPLE supposed to "embrace the fight"!

They get the screws tightened everywhere they go. From above the corruption has become so ubiquitous people have come to believe this is life.

And where shall they go? They do not trust the police. They do not trust the courts. They do not trust politicians.

    And they are right!

In a country where nobody controls the controllers the people are vulnerable.

"They educate people from kindergarten" The key word is education. In a country where 1000 times more money is spent on skin whiteners than on education, what you see if the final result. Lack of education is the #1 cause of all problems in Thailand as people simply do not know any better. The government has played a major role in keeping the majority of Thailand uneducated so that they can corruptly rob the nation of huge sums of budget money. The government is easy to lead the uneducated people astray that have no education.

Corruption is accepted as normal in Thailand. As much as I would like to agree with the speaker, I doubt for the foreseeable future that the country will truly do anything about it.

D5 : LMAO!!! Sometimes you're just so negative...but I love it. Those mini skywalks will be chocked with street vendors as well. The "game" is rigged. You just can't win.

On the other hand...the Skywalk was necessary because of all the street vendors! Hell you can not walk easily anywhere in Bangkok because of the lousy pavement and your beloved street vendors. Maybe we should have mini skywalks that will lift us over extremely conjested areas caused by street vendors selling us crap like copied porn CD's.

Corruption is not perceived as a serious problem in Thailand, it is in fact totally accepted as the Thai way of life. Thailand, you reap what you sow and not so far down the road this ignorant attitude is going to come back and bite you and send this little country into a death spiral that 1,000 Shinawatras can not recover from.

"Anti-corruption spirit needed". But why??? Everything is working just fine, isn't it?

Personally,I think it's an almost impossible uphill (vertical!) struggle even if you start with education...because education policies comes from the Ministry/Government and they're amongst the most corrupt people in this Country.
The only times we see any "effort" to stop corruption is when the Government of the day target the opposition.
Perhaps when Thailand is finally declared a completely failed and bankrupt state, like Somalia, will things change. Yet perhaps not even then.

It would be nice if this crusade could be extended to the police and the courts
