Government says rice pledging price to remain static

New rules to ensure rice is of high quality, fresh

The pledging price for the 2012-2013 second crop of off-season rice will remain unchanged, Internal Trade Department director-general Wiboonlaksana Ruamraksa says.

The price of rice under the government's pledging scheme for the 2012-2013 crop year will remain at 15,000 baht a tonne for white rice and 20,000 baht a tonne for Hom Mali fragrant rice, she said.

She said the national rice policy committee will hold a meeting Monday to consider criteria for the rice pledging scheme for the 2012-2013 crop year, which is expected to cost 105 billion baht.

Crazy that governments "believe" they can manage and control global free market economies. Supply and demand will dictate the per ton price, nothing the Thai government or anybody else can do about it. Better to educate the farmers and experience the truth. Use the tax money to help with other social and educational programs. With greater potential for future, long term ROI. Tell me, teach me, show me, let me try.....give me a drink and I'm still thirsty, teach me how to dig a well and I'll have water forever.

Having had all morning to think about this there may be a mistake in the report. They say no rice less than 100 days - perhaps they mean more than 100 days. That would make sense to get fresh rice or is sense a completely alien word in Thailand?

After all the hallucinatory hub schemes, Thailand has at least managed to become The Hub of Madness.

She said the committee will also put in place stricter measures to cope with irregularities plaguing the scheme.
Perhaps some politicians, Rice Millers & Traders, and associates should go to jail for corruption on a large scale, inaccountability snd transparency of rice sales, stock controls and intentionally miisleading and cheating on the electorate, e.g taxpayers. Ultimately we see so much many more unusualy rich goverment officials and private entrepreneurs directly affiliaated with this goverment.

D8 : "Wealth redistribution is the goal". And by that statement you mean taking from the tax-paying middle class and give to the rich and powerful, right? Because the average farmer's net income hasn't risen at all since this scam was introduced. A fact completely ignored by both PTP/UDD and those who support them.

"Farmers will continue to get the base price of 15,000 baht per tonne for rice, but the national rice policy committee meets Monday to set new quality standards".

Continue? At no point in time did farmers get 15,000 baht per tonne,so what are we talking about here?

"Stupid is as stupid does." (Forest Gump)

Meanwhile, hard-earned taxpayers' money continues to be wasted down the drain, and for what?

If the farmers have to store the rice for 3 months, perhaps it will give the rice mills the chance to reduce the price they give farmers because of quality issues. The farmers will get poorer while the rice mill owners and their politician friends will get richer, and this is the most important thing in their eyes. However, there will surely be consequences for the person behind this new idea. This government is always fighting fires. It just can't do anything right the first time. Primary School children could run the country better, I fell.

The cost of the rice pledging scheme would put a small dent in the top 10% of the wealthy in Thailand. At least the farmers are required to produce a product. Much better concept that social programs such as government welfare payments in the US, as only one example. Most candidates during elections do offer populist policies to gain votes. However most do not carry thru with the promises. Wealth redistribution is the goal.
