Thirachai: Strong baht hurting SMEs

The ongoing appreciation of the baht has created a problem for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), former finance minister Thirachai Phuvanartnubala said on Wednesday.

SMEs had already been affected by the government’s 300-baht daily minimum wage nationwide policy, which took effect on Jan 1, and the stronger baht would worsen the situation, he said.

What I find amusing about this charade is the way people think the baht is a product of real economic principles when in fact, the BoT simply announces whatever exchange rate they think is appropriate. Ever since the baht collapsed 15 years ago, the government has been vigilant in making sure those dark days never return. Remember a few years ago when the red shirts were demonstrating? Instead of weakening like every other currency in the world would have, the baht became ridiculously stronger, a
sure sign of government manipulation. The BoT obviously moves the exchange rate however it wants.

Tourism,Exports both will be crippled if the Baht stays at its present rate. But the Government do not want to do anything I wonder why.Could it be they do not understand or is it that they think foreign investment is more important, but hey the money made from the said foreign investment will not stay in Thailand it will not be spent here.
