31 factories eyed as officials probe mercury-tainted fish

PRACHIN BURI : The Industrial Works Department has set a deadline of next month for inspecting water samples from 31 factories to see whether they are the cause of mercury contamination.

The move came after the Pollution Control Department collected 23 fish samples from two rivers and six canals in Si Maha Phot district in January and found that all had mercury levels exceeding the Public Health Ministry's safety standard of 0.02 parts per million compared with the international standard of 0.5 ppm.No harmful levels of mercury were found in water, soil or sediment samples.

Preecha Rungrat, director of the Public Participatory Promotion Bureau, said the inspection will cover 31 factories along the Shalongwaeng canal, a major source of food in the district.
