Real Bangkok Post news stories adapted for learners of English
Easy English news began as a regular feature of the popular readbangkokpost.com website and is now an essential part of the Bangkok Post’s own website in the learning channel section.
The stories are all real, adapted from actual stories from the news section of the Bangkok Post. They have been shortened and reorganised to make them easier to read, but much of the original vocabulary has been retained.
This “easy English” approach has been quite popular with readers. The stories are quite short, most within the 250-350 word range. Readers should be able to finish a lesson in 10-15 minutes.
Like the Internet version, each of the stories has been recorded in the mp3 format, so they can be played on a computer or listening devices like the iPod.
While the stories are short, there is still a lot of vocabulary to learn – the same type of vocabulary you will see each day in the Bangkok Post. Each lesson has a vocabulary activity to help you understand and remember key words from the story and there are frequent review lessons throughout the book, including crossword puzzles.
This year I have added a “reading aloud” pronunciation section based on an idea I developed in my book “Speak English Clearly,” published by Post Books. For many Thai speakers of English, reading English aloud is a very difficult task and the language they produce is almost impossible to understand. This goes beyond the problem of pronouncing individual sounds and takes special practice to correct. You will get such practice at the end of each lesson in this book.
