The Thai Premier League has the players, the money and the fans. What seems to be missing in many cases is adequate security.

Security needed
The Thai Premier League (TPL) has grown a lot in the past few years. The teams are more professional and better funded and the crowds are much bigger and more enthusiastic than in the past.
What seems to be missing in many cases is better security. There have been a number of violent incidents at TPL matches, resulting in many injuries.
The latest incident occurred on Saturday in Nakorn Prathom, after a playoff match at Kamphaeng Saen stadium between Nakhon Pathom FC and Si Sa Ket FC. The match, for promotion to the TPL, ended in a 0 – 0 draw, severely damaging the home team’s chances of jumping into the top division.
Nakorn Pathom FC fans were incensed at referee Apisit Unrak who had red-carded two of their players during the match. They accused him of being biased and taking bribes.
The situation quickly got out of control when a large group of fans attacked referee Apisit and Si Sa Ket supporters.
In TV footage of the melee, Flight Sgt Nopporn Sirirangsri, security guard of Nakhon Pathom chairman Chaiya Sasomsap, was seen carrying a gun.
Nopporn now faces charges of assault and carrying a firearm without permission. He turned himself in to police yesterday. He denied the charges and was released on bail, Kamphaeng Saen police said.
Former public health minister Chaiya had called a press conference yesterday but he did not show up. His secretary said he was not in the proper emotional state to talk to the press. However, Mr Chaiya said through his secretary that he was sorry. Chaiya had earlier lashed out at the referee and the Football Association of Thailand (FAT).
Chaiya was quoted by his secretary as saying that he would accept any punishment from the FAT and the TPL. The football authorities are expected to make a ruling on the matter today or Jan 4.
