Google’s hands-free internet “Glass” on sale this year
Take a quick look around any public place – the Skytrain, a restaurant, a hotel lobby – and you will see a lot of people are not paying attention to their surroundings.
Instead, they are in a world of their own, focused on the screen of their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device.
“An emasculating experience,” says Google co-founder Sergey Brin who wants to begin change all that, not in some distant time in the future, but later this year.
Yesterday, he made a brief appearance on stage at a conference in Long Beach California wearing a special set of glasses that allowed him to look and speak directly to his audience while being connected to the internet at the same time.
If you look closely, the web connection is provided through a single rectangular piece of glass in front of the right eye, containing a transparent screen.
Brin explained that the product, known as Google Glass, frees the eyes as well as the hands when it comes to connecting to the internet on the go.
"That is why we put the display up high, out of the line of sight. If I wore a cap, the display would be on the brim and not where you are looking," he continued.
Glass wearers can speak commands to the eyewear, and built-in camera technology allows pictures or video to be captured from first-person perspectives. Thus, you can actually show the person you are talking to where you are and what you are doing.
The news of the day, however, was Brin’s announcement that Glass eyewear will be available later this year – at prices somewhat lower than the $US1,500 charged to software developers and early users during a restricted test phase.
