The "happy hacker" reappears – in the US.
We haven't heard much about the "happy hacker", or "smiling hacker" after his arrest at Suvarnabhumi airport in January.
You will recall that Hamza Bendelladj became somewhat of a sensation for his constant smile despite serious charges against him filed by the US Government.
Then, he disappeared from the news.
Well, we now know where he is. He is in Atlanta, Georgia in the US where authorities have filed 23 charges against him for computer and bank fraud. It appears he not only hacked into banks himself, but, more importantly, he sold software that made it easy for ordinary computer users to rob banks online as well.
The software, known as SpyEye, can be purchased for as little as $2,000 (about 60,000 baht) and it was responsible for a cybercrime boom that has drained tens of millions of dollars from bank accounts in the US and Europe, according to Brett Stone-Gross, a security expert at Dell SecureWorks in Atlanta.
Hamza was very clever, but he was apparently not immune from mistakes. One expert who aided in the investigation said that the hacker's real identity was uncovered through his use of two email addresses that led to his Facebook account.
As usual, Hamza does not appear overly bothered over the charges against him. Wearing a dress shirt and black athletic pants, he smiled frequently and chatted during his Atlanta courtroom appearance, much as he chatted with reporters and photographers after his arrest at Suvarnabhumi. He said he didn't need an interpreter because he spoke fluent English.
