Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had some surprise visitors yesterday when he attended a function at the Miracle Grand Hotel.
There to meet him were new United Front for Democracy leader Thida Thavornseth and another UDD core leader, Veera Musikhapong.
Not surprisingly, the main topic of their 30-minute conversation was how to secure the release on bail of UDD leaders and supporters held on terrorism and other charges. Ms Thida’s husband, Weng Tojirakarn is one of those leaders.
According to Ms Thida, Mr Abhisit told her that he wanted her to tell other red shirt leaders that he would see to it that the Justice Ministry’s Rights and Liberties Protection Department would provide the detained red shirts with assistance with bail.
“We will communicate to the UDD leaders that the prime minister wishes to see the Rights and Liberties Protection Department take part in the process,” she said.
“The UDD does not see any other option.”
Ms Thida said the lawyers for the red shirt supporters had earlier failed to secure bail for them.
The prime minister said the Criminal Court would decide whether to grant bail to each of the detained red shirt supporters. The Rights and Liberties Protection Department would first look into bail opportunities for the supporters before the leaders.
The prime minister said during the surprise encounter that he supported peaceful political activities, Ms Thida said.
“We will continue to fight for our cause through peaceful means, she said.
The group also would no longer demand the dissolution of the House.
