Traffic safety the big New Year’s concern
The New Year holiday break is almost here and once again attention is focused on highway safety.
This year concern has been heightened by a horrendous fatal accident Monday night on the Don Muang elevated tollway.
Eight people died in the crash near the Bang Khen exit of the tollway. Seven others were seriously injured.
Pol Lt Col Chatchai Aiem-ong, superintendent at Vibhavadi police station, said footage from a camera on the tollway showed a car swerving just before it collided with a passenger van, which was travelling from Thammasat University Rangsit Campus. The impact pushed the van into the tollway barrier.
The van door was torn off and eight of the passengers were thrown out of the vehicle and over the barrier to the ground below.
Naruemon Nilawan, 57, aunt of Thammasat law student Sudawadee Nilawan, 20, who died in the crash, said she wanted to see the strict enforcement of safety measures.
"Is it possible to make every passenger wear safety belts?" Ms Naruemon asked as she turned up at Police General Hospital to recover Sudawadee's body.
"Authorities should take it seriously now. Don't just talk about it when things like this happen."
Traffic safety was the top subject at yesterday’s cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said afterward that the government was considering enforcing additional legal measures in its efforts to improve road safety.
Authorities have been asked to study traffic-related laws which regulate the speed and condition of public transport vehicles and to see if more action could be taken to make the country's roads safer.
"The cabinet has also asked parties concerned to study the enforcement of using GPS technology in all public transport vehicles, and even in passenger vehicles, to help prevent accidents," he said.
Deputy government spokesman Marut Masayawanich said about 50,000 vocational students would be sent to checkpoints and car maintenance spots across the country to provide vehicle inspection services over the New Year break.
A total of 875 hospitals would deploy emergency response teams around the clock over the seven-day holiday, he said.
