Villages are flooded as authorities hold back water to allow rice farmers to finish their harvest, but the affected villagers aren’t complaining. Incidentally, that’s a road in the photo, not a canal.
A flooded road becomes a canal at the Ban Phaen market in Sena district of Ayutthaya province. Government workers built the temporary wooden walkways so local people could move around. TAWATCHAI KEMGUMNERD
Farmers come first
Rice farmers in Ayutthaya have less than a week to finish harvesting their rice before authorities release more water into the Central Plains as part of a scheme to safeguard downstream provinces from flooding.
In Sena district, which is one of nine districts affected by floods, farmers are racing against time to harvest unripened rice as officials struggle to contain the rising water upstream to allow time for farmers to reap their crops.
To allow time for the farmers to bring in their harvest, Sena municipality had to build levees and shut all the floodgates. With nowhere for the water to go, low-lying villages became submerged.
People in these villages seem remarkably understanding.
Nucharee Kongmolpinit, 49, a convenience store owner whose store has been flooded said she understood that the authorities needed to hold back water from flooding the rice fields which caused her community to become submerged.
"We are all in this together so I am still glad we can help out the farmers because they are the ones who need help most. We in the village can endure a few months with little business but the farmers can't," she added.
Yuthi Wakweansin, 53, a construction worker, said his house was flooded but he understands the need to help the farmers and is content with the help he has received from the municipality.
"I don't think it's unfair to save the rice and help the farmers. They invested a lot of money and they are suffering as much as we are.
"They are part of our community too so we have to help them."
