Achoo! Phat Kaphrao banned from army canteen
Popular Thai basil dishes (phat kaphrao) are delicious but preparing them in poorly-ventilated surroundings can turn the immediate area into an environmental disaster zone forcing sneezing passersby to flee.
Thus, many people were not surprised when the Office of the Army Secretary (OAS) yesterday confirmed it has banned the sale of phat kaphrao in its canteen claiming the dish’s strong smell irritates diners

The question on social media users' minds, however, was who ordered the ban.

A photograph of posters advising patrons not to order the spicy stir-fried dish went viral on Wednesday, triggering rumours that army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha had personally ordered the ban.
Social media users speculated that a senior military official became irate when the smell drifted into his office and subsequently banned the dish from being served in the canteen
Gen Prayuth denied he ordered the ban, saying it was simply an OAS regulation designed to protect staff and other patrons from pungent aromas as ventilation in the canteen is poor.
Army secretary Polapat Wannapak said the OAS had held a meeting with food vendors and all had agreed to sell only ready-made food or mild-smelling dishes. However, some vendors complained that customers still frequently ordered phat kaphrao, prompting the OAS to put up the posters, he said.
