TRAVEL MONITOR: Bangkok to be more affordable for Indian flyers by Imtiaz Muqbil
Exactly five years after it began flying in India, IndiGo is set to become the first Indian low-cost airline to launch international routes with flights to Bangkok, as well as Dubai and Singapore, next month.
Its daily flights from Delhi and India, for a total of 14 a week, will add to the 141 direct weekly services between Bangkok and major Indian cities now being operated by Air India, AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Cathay Pacific, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Philippine Airlines, Royal Bhutan Airlines and Thai Airways International.
These airlines collectively link Thailand to Delhi (51 flights/week), Mumbai (49), Kolkata (28), Chennai (7) Hyderabad (4) and Gauhati (2).
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, India is one of the fastest-growing markets overall. In 2007, Indian visitor arrivals totalled 536,356, up 16.65% over 2006, crossing the half-million mark for the first time. In 2010, arrivals had shot up to 791,185, up 28.74% over 2009.
In January-July 2011, India became the sixth-largest source market for Thailand with total arrivals of 552,000, up 77.8% over the same period of 2010. If this growth continues, Indian arrivals are projected to cross one million by 2012, possibly even this year. Effectively, Indian arrivals will have doubled in a mere five years.
The TAT is prioritising the four RICHI countries, (Russia, India, China, Indonesia) which form a catchment area of huge demographic and economic potential, all within medium-haul flying range from Bangkok. These markets are set to help Thailand offset the impact of upheavals in global economic conditions.
In addition to helping achieve those targets, IndiGo is bringing to Thailand new business-model concepts of running airlines in today's fast-growing but highly competitive environment.
According to president and CEO Aditya Ghosh, this business model focuses very simply on the core values of hassle-free travel, keeping processes and systems simple, delivering on the service promise and ensuring high staff morale.
Designed originally to entice passengers away from India's then decrepit but now slowly improving railway system, the business model has helped the airline gain market share, boost profitability and have the confidence to place firm orders for a massive 280 Airbus A320 aircraft, of which only 43 are in operation and the rest to be delivered by 2025.
Target coverage of this fleet is a catchment area of 4-5 hours flying time radius of Indian cities, which over time will cover most of Central Asia, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, a demographic base of hundreds of millions of middle-class people whose only interest is in safe, punctual travel, minus the frills...
...Half of all its passengers are repeat customers. The baggage allowance of 20 kg plus 8kg hand-carry is within reach of the thousands of Indians who will be descending on Bangkok for shopping expeditions
