The BBC is reporting this morning that fragments from a meteorite have been found around a frozen lake near Chebarkul, a town in the Chelyabinsk region.

Meteorite fragments found in Russia

The BBC is reporting this morning that fragments from a meteorite have been found around a frozen lake near Chebarkul, a town in the Chelyabinsk region.

That, of course, is the area where a massive meteor streaked towards the Earth, creating shock waves which shattered windows, damaged buildings and injured 1200 people.

The BBC quotes Viktor Grohovsky of the Urals Federal University as telling Russian media that the material found contained about 10% iron.

"We have just completed the study and we confirm that the particulate matter, found by our expedition in the area of Lake Chebarkul indeed have meteorite nature," Mr Grohovsky told Russia's Ria Novosti news agency.

The six-metre hole found in Lake Chebarkul was apparently not caused by a meteorite, however.

"We believe it was caused by something else," emergency ministry spokesman Vyacheslav Ladonkin told AFP.

Meanwhile, residents of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1.1 million and the centre of Russia's heavy industry, were struggling to pick up the pieces and replace thousands of blown-out windows in time for Monday, when schools are set to reopen

The force blew out a large section of brick wall at the local zinc plant, and tore holes in the walls of the city's ice skating and hockey centre, where several matches were cancelled.

Forty people remained in hospital Sunday, mostly with cuts, broken bones and concussion, a doctor from the Chelyabinsk hospital told Rossiya Channel, while a special centre was opened to provide psychological help to those disturbed by the incident.
