Waterproof iPhone? Don't believe it!
The advertisement looks real. To most ordinary people, the language sounds plausible and convincing Stop right there. Don't believe it. It's a hoax
The advertisement touts a special feature of the new Apple operating system iOS 7, a feature that essentially makes your expensive new iPhone 5s waterproof
"With the new features and groundbreaking innovation of iOS 7, your iPhone is able to instantly detect sudden changes in thermodistribution with the touch sensitive screen and home button."
"In an emergency a smart switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry "
The tempting idea of waterproofing an iPhone guaranteed the "advert" would gain widespread attention through the social media A fake facebook entry from Apple CEO Tim Cook soon followed confirming the "innovation" as did videos from iPhone users appearing to show their devices survived the water test.
Tech-savvy phone users quickly realised something was wrong. The new operating system (OS) is a software update. It does not change the hardware. Dousing your iPhone leaves a dead iPhone, no matter if it was turned on or off, no matter what OS has been installed.
Unfortunately, some gullible users found this out the hard way. They couldn't resist testing the new feature for themselves. Angry twitter messages followed, condemning those who had spread the hoax
If your new iPhone does get wet for any reason, experts say all you can do is dry it off as best you can and hope. Let's stop one rumour before it starts. No, drying your phone in a microwave is NOT a good idea.
