A short passage about transnational internet crime including a vocabulary list.
As the internet has spread across national borders and connected the world, transnational crime has increased.
Fraud, the crime of getting money from people by tricking them or lying to them, is perhaps the most common internet crime.
One kind of fraud is identity theft or phishing.
Computer hackers send a victim an email attachment or have them download a Trojan horse virus which enables them to gain access to a victim’s computer.
Once the virus is active on the victim’s computer, the hackers monitor the victim’s online banking transactions and use this information to withdraw money from their bank account.
Another way that the crime of fraud is perpetrated is by installing fake card slots on an ATM.
The PIN number of card holders' is then stolen by tiny skimmers inside the slots.
Taiwanese phone scam gangs have also used call centers in Thailand as a base to call Chinese people with credit cards in countries around Asia and, posing as police, deceive and threaten them and convince them to deposit money into their bank account.
