The Japan Foundation Bangkok, together with the Embassy of Japan, is making local cinemagoers very happy. To mark the centennial anniversary of Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, the Japan Foundation will screen 25 films of the director - on 35mm! - from Jan 6 to 19 at SF World Cinema.
All films have English subtitles and every screening is free. You won't find a richer deal than this anywhere on Earth.
The "Akira Kurosawa Centennial Retrospective" will present his internationally-known films such as Rashomon (1950), Seven Samurai (1954) Ikiru (1952) Yojimbo (1961) and Ran (1985), as well as his rarely-seen early works such as Judo Saga (1943), The Most Beautiful (1944), The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail (1945), and No Regrets For Our Youth (1946). We'll also see the genre-drifting Kurosawa working with various themes and stories: Throne of Blood (1957) was adapted from Shakespeare's Macbeth; The Hidden Fortress (1958) is a period adventure film that partly inspired the Star Wars films; High and Low (1963) is a crime thriller famed for its nightmarish "dope alley" scene.
It would take a graduate thesis to describe each of Kurosawa's movies. In short, after Rashomon won the Venice Golden Lion in 1950, Kurosawa had probably more than any other Japanese masters - Kenji Mizoguchi or Yasujiro Ozu, to name just two - shaped the image and perception of Japanese cinema to audiences around the world. His brand of Oriental humanism and the way his films are deeply entwined with philosophical and social commentary have made him one of the greatest contributors to cinematic art in the 20th century.
This is the best chance to watch (or rewatch) his films, especially on a real cinema screen.
