The 15th ‘Fruit & Vegetable Carving, Flower & Banana Leaf Decoration Contest’ will be held at Grand Mercure Bangkok Fortune on Aug 1.
The fruit and vegetable carving contest returns to the Grand Mercure Bangkok Fortune and this year's entries will help promote Thai crafts to the world.
Held to celebrate HM the Queen's 81th birthday anniversary, the 15th "Fruit & Vegetable Carving, Flower & Banana Leaf Decoration Contest" will take place on Aug 1, from 8am to 5pm.
This year's theme is "Bang Sai Arts and Crafts: Window to the World". It refers to the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre in Ayutthaya province. It was established by HM the Queen in 1976 to serve as a window for the world for Thai folk arts and crafts.
The centre provides training on handicrafts and supplementary occupations to underprivileged villagers in remote areas in order to bring them more incomes.
The judging panel will consist of representatives from the Bureau of the Royal Household, Chitralada Palace, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, educational institutions, as well as national artists. The winning team will receive a trophy from HM the Queen.
The competition is held annually to promote Thai art. It has received great support from Thai hotel industry and educational institutes which have often sent many teams to show off their carving skills.
