An international symposium will be run by the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (QSMT) to encourage the exchange of knowledge about royal dress and textile traditions of Asia.
Entitled "Weaving Royal Traditions Through Time: Textiles and Dress at the Thai Court and Beyond", the symposium will take place at Dusit Thani Bangkok on Rama IV Road from Nov 6-9.
HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will graciously preside over the official opening of the symposium and will also deliver the opening address.
The four-day event aims to introduce the world-class museum to an international audience and to provide both Thais and foreigners with the opportunity to learn more about the importance and history of royal textiles and court fashion.
Presentation topics will include Indian, Chinese and Cambodian textiles at the Thai court; a late 19th-century royal collection of Indonesian batik recently discovered in the Grand Palace Inner Court; Thai influences on Myanmarese royal dress; a textile tribute between the courts of mainland Southeast Asia; the conservation and preservation of royal objects in Thailand and beyond; fashion design for modern royalty, and the history and costuming of khon, the traditional court dance-drama recently revived by HM Queen Sirikit.
The conference will be conducted in English (with Thai as the second language) and is open to the public. The registration fee is US$450 or 14,000 baht ($399 or 12,500 baht for students).
