Coming to grips with one's past through the form of writing is a carthatic experience for many, including Bangkok-born psychiatrist Dr Watcharaphol Alexandre Kamnerdsiri.
Currently based in France, he is a recognised consultant in war psychiatry and author of Diaspora, a book published in Thai by Post Books about his tumultuous childhood and young adult years. Above all, the emotionally charged encounters detailed in the book portray how Dr Watcharaphol braved a number of obstacles to receive acceptance and recognition from people who doubted his competence to make something of his life.
The book highlights the need to make peace with one's past, regardless of how painful it might have been, and to look to the future with hope. Dr Watcharaphol seems to have come out emotionally stronger and also wiser from life-altering ordeals that may have had the opposite effect on others.
