A first encounter with Mahler's music is often a life-altering event. Several notable conductors have divided their spiritual and musical lives into "BM" and "AM" (Before Mahler and After Mahler). Mahler's music is transformative _ and its power endures to this day.
This certainly holds true for me as well. My first encounter was 30 years ago and my enthusiasm has never diminished since.
Not only have I attended Mahler events in my own city, but I have also taken to flying to Mahler concerts in far-off destinations including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rotterdam, and Boulder, Colorado. And now _ unlikely as it seems _ in Bangkok.
