For spring 2013, master perfumer Christine Nagel created Jo Malone London's Sugar & Spice collection of delectable fragrances inspired by British sweet treats such as lemon tart, and redcurrant and cream summer pudding. Jo Malone's new project took on an odd combination that had Nagel pondering how a floral smell might blend with the textures of fabric and leather.
Ultimately, her profound perfumery resulted in the Peony & Blush Suede collection for the British brand. Working on the blend, Nagel firstly looked at the floral component.
"The peony is such a delicate, beautiful flower, so widely adored for its romantic and blousy appeal. There are so many varieties of peony, and so many stages the flower takes; the tight bud which gently unfolds as the petals fall softly from the stem," she said. "I had to choose which facets of this extraordinary flower I wanted to transcribe in the fragrance. Additional layers are created with the sensuality of rose honey, the sophistication of jasmine and the spice of gillyflower."
