Violence in the South

Violence in Thailand’s restive southern provinces has claimed over 5,000 lives since 2004, when Islamist separatists stepped up their campaign against government forces and civilian targets. Despite efforts by the National Reconciliation Commission to negotiate with insurgents, car bombings, drive-by shootings and civilian casualties are a common occurrence, mainly in the southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. So far this year the insurgency has led to 428 deaths and over 1,200 casualties (figures Jan-Oct 2012). Graphic by Suchart Chaovalitvanitchakorn and Prapasri Vasuhirun.

"claimed over 5,000 lives since 2004"

This number, 5,000, has been used for the past 2-3 years and should be closer to 10,000.

Oh, and they are terrorists, not separatists or insurgents despite what Khun Chalerm says.

No one or no group of people should be able to achieve an objective through terrorism, violence or threats. This is Thailand and Thailand is known throughout the world as a Buddhist, tolerant nation. If a minority has difficulties in coming to terms with this then they should leave.

The whole country is a victim as resources are drained and bled through the selfish actions of a minority.

The only solution is to annex those problematic southern regions and give them devolution to govern and run their own affairs without any help or financial assistance from the Thai government.

D1 IMO it is important to show that the murderers are indifferent to religion.

The headline refers to "Islamist separatists". Some claim the killers only want land that belonged to Malaysia which is not a religious objective

An undeniable fact. Each day in the South people leave home aiming to kill and anyone will do.

Why are the victims listed by religion? Surely a victim is a victim.....
