Asean seeks South China Sea talks

JAKARTA - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is seeking early talks with China to discuss a code of conduct to manage tensions over the disputed South China Sea, the bloc's new chief said Wednesday.

China claims most of the Sea, including a vital shipping lane and resource-rich areas. The Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei have overlapping claims in the area, as does Taiwan.

The Chinese acts in the South China Sea have repeatedly violated previous COC signed with ASEAN and all international laws signed by China. What good does another COC, even a binding one this time do when China shows no regard at all? Best approach is for non-Chinese claimants ( Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam ) to reconcile their claims and officially agreed on a UNCLOS based EEZ, ocean sharing, laws enforcing and international assistance package. This will confront Chinese claim of the whole sea and bring China to the table to reveal its true intentions. The bully China only fears united resistance of nations.

As early as possible. the ASEAN nations should work as one and let the world that they now how to stand firm on what they know is right for them. Except Cambodia which is dependent to china, but with or without cambodia, ASEAN should stand firm ....
