A new, second airport in Ho Chi Minh City is necessary to ease traffic congestion at the existing airport in the commercial hub in south Vietnam, the Vietnamese Transport Ministry has said.

The ministry's report sent to the government favoured the construction of a new Long Thanh airport instead of expanding the capacity of Tan Son Nhat, Vietnam News reported.
