Vanz Boys _ illegal street racers riding for girls and glory

Teen motorcycle gangs tear up quiet city streets on their modified rides, revelling in the thrills and danger. And those charged with keeping the peace say there is little chance of slowing them down

"Even though we try to avoid the police they are part of the thrill," says 22-year-old motorcycle street racer Aod.

AND THE GIRLS WHO LOVE THEM: Vanz boys ride to a race site on Father’s Day with their ‘sagoi’ girls on the backs of their bikes. The girls, who are attracted to dangerous boys, get off the bikes before the races start. (Photo by Pornprom Sarttarbhaya)

"Those who are fast enough to get away from the police are considered heroes. We have an expression among our group _ 'no cops, no fun'."

Police taking bribes? Mr Chalerm will deal with it (unless he is getting a cut of the action).

The other day a bunch of these hooligans were throwing bombs(?)/firecrackers all over the road at Boromrochonanee ..... hope the police get the help they need. Perhaps the national police chief should push things along.

I see many young people behave crazy, out of control, in completely legal behaviour, even while with parents. No mention of "sugar" in diet. All product seem to be sweetened. Addiction and excess sugar in any form triggers out of control behavior, and major contributor to diabetes later in life--epidemic in Thailand. When I hear in night, distant roar of motorbike engine, I think of sugar diet, then caffeine drugs sold over counter at every 7-11 and convenience shop, i.e. M-150. empty bottles everywhere!....even in rice fields! And, much worse, amphetamine drug. Manufacturers make millions of Baht selling these poisons.

Teenagers doing what teenagers always do. Rebel.

It's unfortunate that the adults with a duty of care to be there for them are failing. Parents, lawmakers, law-enforcers, teachers should all be ready to consider what sort of role-modeling they are offering.

Even paying off the cops seems to be a badge of courage and a sign of growing up. Wonder where they learnt that one.

I think that a spotlight needs to be put on the police and all their shameless money making at the expense of the law .

Thai police in Bangkok are just about as useless as Thai military in the southern provinces.

In developed countries motorbike license is the most difficult to obtain compared to passenger or van/bus/lorry ones. Unfortunately in Thailand there is a strong demand for motorbike. We must seriously start to be utmost restrictive in issuing the motorbike license, raise the bar to 25 years old, requirement to have a license before you can buy a motorbike and revoke all vanz licenses permanently and also ban them from applying other licenses for life.
