2012 - When Asean felt Beijing's bite

It was a year of Chinese bullying and souring regional relations, when former leaders were hauled before the courts and ethnic tensions turned violent. Mother Nature left her calling cards while authorities wrapped up loose ends in the war on terror in Southeast Asia and Myanmar made steady steps toward democracy, raising hopes for the New Year.

Twenty-twelve should be remembered as the year in which China acted on its long-standing claims in the South China Sea, took off the gloves and arraigned its intimidating military and diplomatic arsenal against its neighbours to the south. Gone were the usual glib lines that China only gives foreign aid and soft loans to countries in need, with no strings attached. Cambodia _ for years a benefactor of Beijing's largesse _ was bullied onto China's political front lines, acting as a spoiler against fellow Asean countries attempting to forge a united front against Beijing's territorial and maritime ambitions.

IN DISPUTE: Pagasa Island, part of the Spratly group in the South China Sea off the coast of the Philippines. China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and Taiwan all claim territory in the South China Sea.

Military stand-offs were focused around the Spratly and Paracel islands, characterised by gunboat diplomacy deployed amid an overarching presence by the US, whose pivot back to Southeast Asia added a sense of urgency to the dispute and some balance to Chinese belligerence.

    Spiceman,

PM Plaek Phibunsongkhram's Nationalist supporters changed the name of Siam to Thailand, 1949 & 1939. Partly because of their profound hostility to the Chinese in Thailand and their drug/tax collecting gangs. Phibun had restricted Chinese immigration and closed 100s of Chinese schools & newspapers. His hostility to PRC China also put him in a better light with the Western powers.

The corruption of the Qing Dynasty caused many Chinese to immigrate & Isan saw immigrates when Mao first came to power. But Mao's type of Communism died with the 'Cultural Revolution' & the Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam invasions/takeovers by the PRC.

Khun ACR #7, our ancestors and that of Laos were a minority people in the South of China, who migrated southward nearly a thousand years ago. In time, we developed our own distinct language and culture. Prior to the Communist Revolution in China, there was an influx of modern Chinese people into Thailand, my grandfather was one of them.

The name "Siam" was changed to "Thailand" in 1949, to make it sounds modern like England. That's all, it has nothing to do with Chinese migration whatsoever.

Now U.S.A has a plan to realize the encircling net around China. But this is one of double-standard by U.S.A.
Actually, the weaken U.S.A -a great country that has grown old- has thought to promote an economic cooperation with China. "China is most important country for U.S.A". And, "U.S.A also is most important country for China.
China is the largest U.S.dollar possessing country in the world now. If now U.S.dollar collapsed, China suffers a serious damage. If now China sells U.S.dollar, the U.S.dollar will collapse on the exchange-market in the world.
So, U.S.A has no intention to fight against China in earnest.

China used to complain about "Hegemony" and now it attempts to exert it's own control and dominance over it's smaller neighbors.

China is now in territorial/RESOURCE conflicts with almost EVERY country that comes close to their borders.
The precidence was set, when the World IGNORED/validated the Tibet invasion and the following occupation after 1949.
Remember that Siam changed its name to Thailand, due to the backlash caused by the mass migration of Chinese into Siam.
As the Nation's Editor and others are stating, a Chinese conflict with the other WORLD/Asian Powers is inevitable...

Yes the peace loving Chinese, that have no problem in bullying Nations and claiming waters that are not even within their economic territory. Just another case of if you don't tell me to get out, because you don't like to cause 'Loss of Face' to anybody, then I'll just claim it as China's, and bad luck for you!

Pepole shoud study their history of how China used intimidation against the nations of SE Asia and had them Kowtowing to the Empire of China. If Nations don't oppose the draconian moves by China now, then they will only have themselves to blame as China "STEALS" all their natural resources.

When ASEAN come together soon, we can have the power to stop China, and if they continue, we can send ASEAN soldier to take over China. Lao can be the Navy, Indonesia the Army, and Thailand can be the leader because we have technology.
