Investors' expectations have been reshaped since the turmoil of the 2008 financial crisis. Whereas solid returns from traditional investments were once the norm, today's investor is happy to beat inflation expectations. Finding good opportunities is another matter altogether.
Over the past five years, many investment opportunities that were originally considered "safe" have turned out to be disappointing in terms of their returns, or have even failed totally. Even now it is very difficult to understand or trust certain asset classes. Once upon a time people would invest in specifics and would know that returns would materialise over time, but it seems myriad circumstances have hit investors unexpectedly of late.
