Abhisit's rank case put on hold

Sukumpol shrugs off legal move against him

The Defence Ministry will comply with a court order to explain its draft-dodging case against Democrat Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said on Saturday.

The ministry would submit its statement within 30 days as the Administrative Court requested, he said, even though it has evidence to support the decision to strip Mr Abhisit of his military rank.

Loss of military rank for an alleged transgression that took place 25 years ago could put Mr Abhisit at risk of losing his status as an MP as well.

One should be proud to be a draft dodger. No one should be forced to join an army, especially an army that has non problems with killing it own citizens! Fortunatly, most modern and democratic countries have abolished this. You now become a soldier by choice, not by force. Long way to go Thailand.

Some just don't get the point. AV avoided conscription with falsified documentation. He then taught at the military collage where he was given a military title, by avoiding the draft his application to the military collage was fraudulent. AV has continually denied any wrongdoing but he has never bothered to go to the hearings, submit his side of the story or documentation to clear his name.

"He had repeatedly said that he opposed corruption but he did this thing himself. Is this Thailand?

Do these politicians listen to themselves? I mean honestly how can he say this? In case Defence Minister Sukumpol doesn't know. This IS Thailand!!! 5555555

If AV didn’t served in the Army, why was there a need to reclaim his “salary” by the Army? If he had served in the Army in any capacity, those Army people who came into contacts with him from yester years can attest to his service.
ACM Sukumpol seemed to be expending a lot of time and energy barking at the wrong tree; it’s the insurgents in the Deep-South that he should be urgently engaged in to “protect” his countrymen. With lies you may go ahead in the world, but you can never go back. – Swedish Proverb

I've yet to meet somebody who understands Buddhism and Democracy and yet Thailand claims to be a Buddhist democracy. Their Buddhism is about idolatry and democracy is run by a load of thugs in red shirts on the streets. The land of smiles???

Dear, dear, Thailand gets more and more childish by the day. Jatuporn wants to protect democracy? He doesn't know the first thing about it. The nonsense we read. It's like going back to 4th grade or even further. Who the hell does know what they are talking about in this backwater of a country?

Abhisit is in good company: both Bill Clinton and Bush junior dodged military service.

Why hasn't AV been called to court to prove he is not guilty. He says he is not guilty but refuses to show the proof. The DM has falsified documents as proof so what am I missing here.

Its no OK for Abhisit to hold a position if he dodge his military service, BUT its ok for an MP to be convicted of a crime and be in jail AND still hold onto his MP status. Amazing government.

We are not talking about moral or cultural justification here. This is strictly a legal issue, Abhisit did the right thing by going to court instead of, holding lame press conferences and explaining his story. Both Sukumpol and Abhisit moved on what they think is right, now there is no red, yellow, democrat, or P.T. Let the courts decide, let all parties accept the decision of the court. Only let us keep threats to the judges and their families away from this issue.
