Onet to gauge teacher standings

Students' Ordinary National Education Test (Onet) scores will be used to consider whether teachers will receive professional academic accreditation.

Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) secretary-general Chinnapat Bhumirat said the government has already spent a lot on education.

About 30 billion baht has been paid to teachers who met teaching standards and have had their academic standing increased, he said.

Greater academic standing does not necessarily lead to better teaching. I have known PhD's who were absolutely useless in a classroom. What Thailand needs is better teacher preparation. Specifically, English majors and minor ONLY should teach English. Go to any primary and secondary school and see who is teaching the subject. More often than not, it is someone totally unqualified for the job. If I have to speak Thai to an English teacher, I know something is wrong.

"academic standing leads to higher pay grades and the possibility of working in more prestigious schools"

They should pay teachers more at remote schools in order to attain better quality teachers where it is needed most.
