Panel rejects court call to put amendment to poll

The government's panel on constitutional amendments has vowed to press ahead with the bill to rewrite the charter, which could trigger a new wave of political unrest.

The bill seeks to amend Section 291 of the constitution to make way for the establishment of a drafting assembly to rewrite entirely the 2007 charter.

Moves to amend Section 291 stopped on July 13 after opponents asked the Constitutional Court to rule whether the proposed changes were part of a plan to overthrow the monarchy.

    For the record:

Only One of the Justices of the Constitutional court "suggested" that a referendum should be held, so to state that this was the decision of the entire court is somewhat misleading.
