DSI chief: No reason to indict me

Tarit Pengdit, director-general of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), said there is no reason to investigate his own actions as a member of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) during the 2010 crackdown on red-shirt protesters, because he was just following orders - not issuing them.

Mr Tarit confirmed on Friday that former prime minister Abhisit Vejajiva and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban had now been formally summonsed to acknowledge the charges on Dec 12. Both men face a charge of premeditated murder over the death of Phan Khamkong, a taxi driver shot during the deadly crackdown in 2010.

The DSI chief said the date had, however, been postponed to Dec 13 because Mr Abhisit would be travelling abroad. He said he wa not involved in the decision to indict the two men.

if the statement "just following orders" attributed to Khun Tarit is correct, then I suspect he purchased his law degree at a 7/11!!!

Discussion 10 bkk-farang : "How can Abhisit and/or Suthep be guilty of murder?"
Fully agreed with you. That's why these two defendents have to stand side by side inside the defendent box to face the trial.

@genii #9: How can Abhisit and/or Suthep be guilty of murder? They must have planned to kill Phan Khamkong to be guilty of murder. Is there anybody out there – even a hardcore red-shirt – who thinks Abhisit or Suthep gave the explicit order to kill anybody by name or does anybody think they pointed at the taxi and ordered “kill him”? Get real!

At this early stage it is impossible to say who is guilty but if this can bring out more truth then let the chips fall where they may. The innocent dead deserve that much.

Surely Mr Tarit can now state without doubt whether or not there were orders to 'shoot to kill' as has been rumoured (by Red Shirts) for years.

If I understand correctly, the main responsibility of Mr. Tarit, (the DSI chief), is more likely to be as a mailman. He transmits the orders and the reports from the left side of his desk to the right side, and vice versa. But it's not about the checking the coherence of his staff’s investigations!

What do you think about the above?

    I don't think, I pity !

    This is pathetic.

@D2: The TRC said that Reds shot at soldiers from inside the temple and so soldiers then shot into the temple. The Reds who did that are just as guilty as the soldiers - even more so.

As the world learned at the Nuremberg trials, 'I was just following orders' is not a defense. Tarit should be indicted. Unless he stood up at the CRES meetings and said this is illegal and I can not do it, then he is just as guitly as anyone else - if anyone at CRES is actually guilty in the first. place. Tarit has absolutely no shame.

Illegal orders coming from superiors can and must not be obeyed. Instead of following orders, Tarit should have pointed out to AV and Suthep that their orders were illegal. He failed to do so. So he should be indicted as well.

I guess now he is also just following orders to act against Abhisit and to forget about the charges against the terrorists who burned down Bangkok. Or did I miss the news with the details when the trials against Jatuporn, Nattawut and all the others will start? Abhisit is not the only one who has no MP immunity in the moment – double standards again?
