Time bombs ticking for the Yingluck government

The Pheu Thai-led administration will only undermine itself if it doesn't stop playing with hot-button issues

Political time bombs are not being laid by outsiders but by the Yingluck Shinawatra government itself, observed Post Today.

Pongsapat Pongcharoen and Sudarat Keyuraphan are both in the running to represent the Pheu Thai Party in the Bangkok governor election.

The first and most prominent of these is the government's rice pledging scheme. Academics, political observers and independent organisations have tried in vain to convince the government that the scheme will lead the country into bankruptcy but the administration has stood its ground, citing the mantra that it is a good policy that benefits farmers.

Populist policies work in regard to being re-elected, but they do not benefit the future of a nation as a whole.

This is the problem of many nations, including the US. Is it the only purpose of politicians to remain in office or is their duty to provide a better future for all?

Normally I try to stay out of Thai politics as I am an expat, but I live here. My other half was angry at me when I expressed my opinion, which was against populism: populism is popular but expemsive and in my opinion irresponsible. The children should not have a future that pays for the excess of today.

Thailand is not alone.

D1 : Loy Kratong,X-Mas and New Year. Consumer spending,rather than confidence,is always high in November and December. You have to be android,ricefield or something to credit PTP's "economics?" for that. But keep it up. It's very entertaining to read your delusional comments.

A concise article it hits all the buttons but would it get space in a Thai tabloid paper.If only Farangs read it then it will do nothing,it is not read by the average Thai. They are the people that really matter.They are the ones with the vote.
