The Corrections Department has blamed a shortage of prison guards on frequent violent incidents at prisons, including the deadly hostage-taking drama at Khao Bin prison in Ratchaburi on Sunday.
"If we had more warders at the prisons, they would be able to take care of the prisoners and prevent such untoward incidents from happening," department chief Suchart Wong-anantchai said yesterday.
On Sunday, three inmates at Khao Bin prison took Suthep Joisriket, a prison warder, hostage for three hours after the warder tried to stop them from escaping.
