Thailand is interested in a partnership with Japan to jointly develop the 325-billion-baht deepwater port in Dawei, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Thursday.

"I want to see Japan become a partner in the Dawei project," said Ms Yingluck after a meeting with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "I'm hoping for a meeting on the project soon between senior officials from Japan, Thailand and Myanmar."

I believe Thai officials quotes of what the Japanese said as "taken out of context".
They probably bowed, said "ah so ",and left the room saying "loan 350 billion baht, ha, ha",
    silly Thai" !

As a 20 plus year resident, I have seen the Japanese are responsible investors and good national partners.

The Chinese Government , populated by old cold war protagonists however shows naked ambitions to increase territory and a worrying desperation to alter its imbalanced population. With 30 million young unmarried males by 2020 the Chinese Government seems keen to ship many off as guest workers. Thailand should be aware gifts from China come with large strings. Some 30 years ago China supported an overthrow of Thailand. When Thailand shakes the Chinese hand it better count its fingers afterwards. I say welcome Japan.

Allowing Japan and China to buy up large chunks of Thailand is the same thing as giving away sovereignty. It is strange Thai's are ready to take up arms over a small chunk of land in dispute with Cambodia but never say a word when the gov't sells out huge amounts of Thailand to Japan and China.

What will they be shipping to western markets exactly? it won't be rice, and that's as sure as eggs are eggs.

Basically Thailand is going broke with all its populist policies and corruption. They want the Japanese to shoulder the financial responsibility of the port. It is very odd Thailand does not invest in it's own Thai infrastructure or water management projects then begs other countries for money to invest. Someone should ask Yingluck to be transparent and explain where the 350 billion baht water management budget disappeared to? If she managed the govt instead of allowing rampid corruption, there would be no need to beg other countries for money

'I want to see Japan become a partner in the Dawei project, said Ms Yingluck.

Why ?' '...the massive project is known to be in need of financial backing'.

'Japan is interested in investing in infrastructure including the water management project....Japan is ready to help develop infrastructure in Thailand, Mr Abe said'.

Japan wants to protect its investments here. What part of that does she not understand ?
