Police CCTV 'Eyes in the sky' keep watch on party zones

Cameras, foot patrols and even bouncers trained in martial arts are among moves to take the danger out of Bangkok's nightlife

Police are using CCTV cameras in Bangkok's entertainment districts and giving bouncers martial arts training as part of a campaign to ensure safety.

RED LIGHTS, CAMERAS, ACTION: The ‘Safety Zone’ sign hangs over Soi Cowboy.

The police safety zones, which have been operating for several months, are in place in the popular nightspot areas of Soi Cowboy, Patpong, Khao San Road and Nana Plaza.

Are they going to put them in front of all the casinos in the district written on the sign or just watch or just make sure the gogo bars are safe .

Cindy and Glen: Please come to Phuket. You've heard negative reports about crime in Thailand? Ha, ha! You ain't seen nothin' yet.

Is it forbidden to ask who owns the go-go bars in these 'party' zones where nothing illegal ever happens?

    This is tragic-comic.
Thong Lor police are probably the most notoriously corrupt police in Bangkok.

Known for their shake down of tourists and foreigners in general, to fill their own pockets.

The banners should read, "This is a Thong Lor police free zone".

Leave people alone...Thai police is arguably a criminal organization and should stay as far away from tourist as possible.

So the police are still sitting in their station watching cameras while Security from the bars become "tourist security volunteers"? Basic knowledge of the laws, martial arts training, a jacket and a red cap! All this to protect the customers? Let's hope when they jump into action they don't take the law into their own hands and become potential thugs that has happened in other 'civilised' countries. Still prefer the police to do their job as required instead of passing it off, but if it works, O.K. pat on the back to all.

So, outside this zone it is dangerous as hell?

Are there cameras now in the Asoke subway station entrances to catch police shaking down foreigners in the late evenings.

Are there cameras now outside Terminal 21 at Asoke to catch cigarette police scamming tourists after removing the litter bins.

Do cameras in Cowboy now point at the Asoke /Suk intersection to film police shaking down drivers and riders most afternoons after lunch.

Pity eh. It would so easy to catch the crooks wouldn't it.

The flower kids might have gone but the Indians selling watches (without a work permit, I assume) are still pestering people on Cowboy. Why are they still allowed to operate?

Lots of protection money in Soi Cowboy, Patpong, Nana. "To serve and protect" after all.
