Deep South curfew plan gets the axe

Top brass, governors fear wrecking ties with locals

High-ranking security officials yesterday vetoed a proposal to impose a limited curfew in the restive far South.

The Centre for the Implementation of Policies and Strategies for Solving Southern Problems declared the measure unnecessary after reviewing evidence from military and civilian sources at a meeting yesterday. The centre had the final say on whether to approve the plan.

Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC) chief Thawee Sodsong, 4th Army Commander Udomchai Thammasarorat and the governors of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat all told the meeting that existing laws and regulations were sufficient to combat the insurgency.

The first of many of DPM Chalerm's precariously placed. and boasted about dominoes,( promises ) has fallen with others soon to follow. An empty barrel makes the most noise !

Are we to assume that the deputy PM now agrees there is a terrorist problem in the south or is he still in denial and yes his idea of a curfew was not a good one.
To say that the military are wining is a bit of a false statement. Capture or kill one and another two are bread. When will these people in control,or not which ever, realise they are fighting a loosing battle, flogging a dead horse.Talk to these southerners before many more lives are lost on all sides.Come to some agreement and stop this carnage.

The Northern Ireland problem has been going on since the 1700's with thousand dead because the British and Irish were continually throwing bombs an shooting each other. Now that negotiations and talks have started a huge calm has come.
It took Ghandi 30 years to beat the British with his non violent methods.
I can see that the course being taken in the south is to gain the confidence of the locals, and at the same time let the insurgents know they have informers, which will divide and weaken them. Now is the time to get talking and stop the bloodshed.

BP please stop using that ridiculous phrase "the restive South". It is a truthful as saying Walking Street in Pattaya is an ideal environment to take your children to play in. It isn't and the South isn't restive , it is a full blown war zone and pretending it isn't won't make it go away.

IMO part of the reason why this has dragged on for 10 years is because of exactly what you are doing with the "restive South " comment. That is pretending it is something else. Not one top official wants to say they want to win as that implies they know they are under threat. That does not fit with the false narrative that is it just a business dispute.
