Zen awarded B1.977bn 2010 fire claim

The Bangkok Civil Court has ordered insurer Deves Insurance Plc to pay client Central Department Store Co, operating as Zen Department Store, and the Crown Property Bureau a total of 1.977 billion baht in claims for damage caused by a fire at CentralWorld at the end of the red-shirt protest at Ratchaprasong, in downtown Bangkok, in May 2010.

The company bought fire insurance and business disruption insurance from Deves Insurance.

    Putting fire to a building purposely is an act of terror but then, may we call it riot? This is excluded in any insurance policy.

    "The court ruled the fire was not caused by terrorism" I guess this is debatable for quit a few.

    Arsonists were blamed but the Court says they were not terrorists.

    This ruling has major implications for insurers in the future doing business here, for those in prison now and for those who started the fires and their bosses who one day will be exposed during the inevitable Truth and Reconciliation process.
