Key players shun amnesty talk

Charoen meet falters as guest list falls by half

Almost half of the groups invited to Monday's talk on a possible amnesty for political offenders have pulled out after questioning the motives of the dialogue.

The chances of the talk yielding results look increasingly bleak following their withdrawal.

The talk, hosted by deputy House Speaker Charoen Chankomol, follows an unprecedented meeting between leaders of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and anti-Thaksin People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) on Feb 7 to discuss the issue of an amnesty.

Sorry to those who try to twist the issue of laws.

TS could have and should have been pursued within the context of the law at the time.

Once the military resorted to an anti-constitutional and ILLEGAL coup everything that followed was a consequence of that. They circumvented the law.

People have the right, and some would say duty to stand up against oppression. The red shirts/UDD did exactly that.

And I am sure TS has many suspect dealing to answer for. As would most of the wealthy families were they put under the same microscope.

But he was railroaded by a kangaroo court working under the thumb of the military appointed go

    bkposter,

If what we have now is what you would describe as good governance then I can't even imagine what you would call bad governance.

    @majority

You have already told us (BP readers) numerous times that the DP is insignificant, barely has any supporters and has no power anyway. Further you have also told us numerous times on behalf of all the Thais you seem to represent, that the vast majority of Thais are on your side.

If all that is true, then why do you keep ranting?

    Diss 28
Good governance ? LOL More like taking tax payers money and spoon feeding it to the poor who out number them .

RE: D16....you are correct and that is what the DP is afraid of. For them it is better to try to sell the idea that no one but them is capable of running the government. They do not want the issue to be about good governance, because they loose that argument every time.

It is now obviously and it may be hopeless forever for Thai people to see those a few, who determine to keep the country divided, sit at the same table with those people (which are in much greater number), who want to see conciliation achieved in the country. And it was well predicted that those small groups and the DEM would boycott, since they had been using the tactic of divide and conquer for life. Besides, any progress in reconciliation in the country will see their number excuses for street mobs lessened.

Thaksin staying quiet. I want to know of his opinion about this amnesty bill.

  • Discussion 25 : 11 Mar 2013 at 12.3625

"Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit said his party supports Mr Charoen's move and blamed the Democrat Party for "lacking sincerity" on the amnesty issue".

"Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva earlier said he supported an amnesty for people who staged peaceful protests but were charged with violating the emergency decree".

    So who is lacking sincerity?

There is no "hidden agenda" as it is all too obvious that PTP/UDD wants a complete white-wash of Thaksin and his faithful servants who committed arson, murder, violence and other sickening crimes.

  • Discussion 24 : 11 Mar 2013 at 12.2324

Disc 16 - amnesty for Thaksin is not irrelevant. The PT Government's failure to to give a credible undertaking that Thaksin will not be a beneficiary of any PT Government backed amnesty bill is making it possible for the Democrats to get away with non-participation in any meaningful reconciliation process.

    abbub,

It's quite amusing how you, and obviously reds in general, want the rule of law to be applied strictly to Dems/military/anyone you don't like but very conveniently omit everyone and everything else.

"You resort to the rule of law when it suits you only."
I couldn't have expressed it better myself.
