Cites 'loses patience' with Thailand

The world's top officials on illegal ivory trading say Thailand and other "gang of eight" countries must stop the business within a year or suffer severe trade sanctions.

British newspaper the Guardian quoted the officials as identifying the other countries involved as source nations Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, "enabling" countries Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and destination countries Thailand and China.

Tom de Meulenaer, a senior Cites official at the body's conference under way in Bangkok, said the group "had finally lost patience" with Thailand and the other seven countries, according to the Guardian report.

D19 If Thailand was the best, they would NOT be on the list of the illegal "8". You need to educate yourself before you make any more comments and show a total lack of education/knowledge. Did you read the Bangkok Post TODAY? Two THAI MEN arrested for shooting and killing a female elephant. Is the "best Thai's" you are talking about? Is it?

Thai people love the elephant very much, and we always helping the elephant. We cannot stop this ivory trade because it is like saying we will stop crime or murder. Impossible, if someone want to do the crime, they will try and do it. It is not nice for people to talk bad about Thailand and the effort we make to help the elephant. We are the best

Noone will ever understand the illogical Thais. Set the clock back 40 years and try again......

  • Discussion 17 : 11 Mar 2013 at 15.0017

Jeez, doesn't anyone here get outside, or even read the rest of the newspaper? Of course Thailand has faults - like every country. But come on! How many countries did Thailand invade, bomb, and kill thousands in "collateral damage"? How many gulags does Thailand have? How many political prisoners did Thailand's military junta disappear, torture and kill last year? How many girls' schools did the Thai government blow up with bombs last year? Is Thailand a place where gang rape is encouraged? How many nuclear weapons is Thailand testing?

Get a grip, people!! Elephants and ivory are issues of the day, but so are hundreds of REAL problems.

    "Land of Smiles"
Thailand is and will always be a Third World Country,Corruption is rife in every facet of life.
When a leader gets elected who's Brother should be in prison for corruption on a gargantuan scale, and has fled the Country, one has to wonder what the hell ordinary Thais are thinking of ?
Number one priority seems to be a toss up between eating and/or losing face.
The Country is going backwards and all the majority of Thais do is SMILE

Hey CITES! Thailand and it's equally nefarious 'Gang of 8' will never, ever do anything about this until and unless trade sanctions are imposed, NOW!
