A former muay Thai competitor has been found murdered in his apartment in Bangkok's Rat Burana district.
Police visited the apartment building in Suksawat Soi 52 on Sunday after receiving reports of a foul smell coming from one of the rooms.
Officers forced the door open and found the body of a man identified as Anant Prompreut. The victim had been dead for at least three days.
Police believe the victim was strangled with a phone charger cord after being hit with a Buddha statue found near the body.
His 16-year-old stepson told police Anant, 55, was a former boxer who fought under the name Rungdet Chommahakap.
The victim had recently been released from jail after serving a sentence for attempted murder and earned a living as a muay Thai coach in Nakhon Phanom.
He rented the the apartment and had given copies of the key to several friends.
The victim's necklace bearing old Buddha amulets and his mobile phone were missing.
