SAMUT PRAKAN : The Customs Department has seized illicit cigarettes and liquor worth more than 2 million baht from a Cambodian-flagged cargo ship.
The ship's captain and one crew member, both Cambodian nationals, were arrested and charged with smuggling.
The ship was stopped and searched on approach to Phra Pradaeng port in Samut Prakan province early yesterday, Customs Department director-general Rakhop Srisupha-at said.
About 2,350 cartons of untaxed cigarettes and an unspecified quantity of liquor were found hidden in several parts of the ship, including the crew's cabins and the main hold, Mr Rakhop said.
The ship, which is worth more than 22 million baht, was also seized, he added.
Ship captain Sophon Wanthong, 52, and crew member Kan Prasjusamai Sompon were arrested and charged with smuggling untaxed items into the country. They face fines of four times the value of the smuggled products.
Mr Rakhop said his department had also seized 2,210 bottles of glutathione, worth a total of 1 million baht, in a separate operation on Wednesday.
The chemical, commonly used in skin-whitening injections, was shipped from Singapore, he said.
