PM: No rush to amend charter

The government will not rush to amend the constitution but will give a higher priority to restoring the climate of reconciliation in the country, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Sunday.

"Building a climate of reconcilation that is free from conflict is much more important than amending the constitution in order to strengthen the country's economy and security. Constitutional amendment is also important but not urgent. It would not be good if amendments lead to a conflict," the prime minister said.

But Ms Yingluck said a working committee is considering whether to hold a referendum before the amendment, as well as to recommend whether to amend the charter section by section or proceed with voting on the charter amendment bill now with parliament and awaiting its third reading.

What she really means is they will do what ever possible to rewrite the constitution, bring her brother back with no jail time and they really dont care about reconciliation. They are Thailands rulers now. Can you say Dictatorship.

If this government is serious about reconciliation they should stop the witch hunt against Khun Abhist in which they are trying to convict him for doing his job, which was restoring law and order by taking the streets back from a violent mob.

My question, since a large percentage of PTP members are former generals, admirals, police colonials, etc, how will their constitution be any better than the 2007 one which was written by a committee appointed by generals. My other question, aside from forgiveness for the generals what is so bad about the 2007 that requires a total rewrite by the new elite?

I thought the 2007 Charter was approved by the people in a referendum. So where's the problem?

    Brilliant.

I am familiar with Thai politics and the brilliance and the ignorance that surrounds it and anyone's politics. On one hand I commend highly the 'people's' immense interest and involvement. On the other hand I see the destructive 'hatred' from one party to another. In the USA we never had this similarity before 2008. We learned to get along regardless for the 4 years or 8 and believe in our checks and balances. Now if one disagrees with anything it is said to be racist and demonically appointed even though many Bills are passed at midnight behind closed doors and 'setups' are the norm to pit one disagreeing as a lower class citizen or less.

Khun HowIwish #7, don't you find it strange that whenever this "reconciliation" bill was brought up in parliament, all hells began to break loose on the streets? But as soon as it was dropped, peace and stability immediately returned.

She is turning into a real politician with her double-speak language: “it’s not urgent, though important to amend the coup written Constitution, as priorities should be given to the stability (PT government) and economic welfare of the people. Of course, amongst other key institutions and the people, TS too, has to be consulted in matters of public interests”. But events unfolding in Egypt, which mirrored Thailand’s quest to amend the charter, must have spooked the PT to reconsider ramming through similar tactics in amending the charter. “The only thing worse than a liar is a liar that’s also a hypocrite.” – T.Jefferson
