Pongsapat seeks replacement

Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen will soon call a meeting to select his temporary replacement as secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) as he plans to contest the Bangkok governor election, a source said.

The meeting of ONCB executives will decide his temporary successor to take charge at the agency while Pol Gen Pongsapat stands for governor under the Pheu Thai Party banner.

Narong Ratanakul, an ONCB advisor, or Permpong Chaovalit, a deputy chief, are tipped to oversee the agency for Pol Gen Pongsapat, the source added.

In the UK any serving senior army officer, senior policeman, senior civil servant etc has to resign their position if they want to become Mayor of London, an MP etc. This is to ensure the impartiality of the senior ranks of the public sector.

It allows people in the public sector to compete on an equal basis to people in the private sector.

This allows teachers, Doctors, civil servants to participate in the Democratic process of civic administration.

This principle is to be encouraged, otherwise we end up with just professional politicians or business people as candidates.
