UDD pitches riot amnesty by decree

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) has called for a blanket amnesty for all people charged with political offences during conflicts between Jan 1, 2007, and Dec 31, 2011.

Deputy Commerce Minister Nattawut Saikuar, who is also a core UDD leader, said yesterday the amnesty should come in the form of an executive decree.

He said this differs significantly from the proposal put forward by the Nitirat group of jurists which wanted to include a chapter on an amnesty and conflict resolution into an amendment to the constitution.

Even if they were convicted of disobeying the security Act, what is the longest prison term a judge can impose? Surely they have already served such time, or significantly more than would be implosed. However, those that are facing criminal charges - bring the charge to court, try it, make the judgements and that is the end of the story.

Also, how many Nittirat members have charges pending?

D1 It's never a good idea to give blanket immunity to people for future crimes. It would be insane to give it to the PAD.

^ ".....it's time to let these poor foot soldiers out, but not without first asking the UDD leadership what their responsibility was in setting this up"

The answer to that question is easy.......to challenge a coup!....any other questions?

it's time to let these poor foot soldiers out, but not without first asking the UDD leadership what their responsibility was in setting this up. How convenient, a decree that gets them off the hook but will not apply going forward, should the PAD wish to pull the same trick on Yingluck.
