Chumpol Silpa-archa dies at 72

Chumpol Silpa-archa, the Chartthaipattana Party leader, died of renal failure on Monday morning, exactly five weeks after he collapsed from a heart problem while at Government House.

Chumpol, aged 72, who was a deputy premier and tourism and sports minister, was pronounced dead at 9.39am at Ramathibodi Hospital on Jan 21.

His relatives collected his body from the hospital to perform funeral rites at Wat Thepsirin.

D5 no he won't quit unless he gets a serious health problem, but then he will leave with his sister right?

Hmm a tough one. RIP to Khun Chumpol and condolences to his family. That said as a politician he was an utter fool.

Karma's a bitch when it bites you on the arse.

This is the same person who said a sexual assault on a tourist last year couldn't be called rape because she had dinner with her attacker.

Obviously a man of impeccable morals and ethics. Given the number of times he changed political sides to hold on to the post of Minister of Tourism I'm surprised "doing a Silpa-archa" hasn't entered the Thai political term lexicon.

Government officials are mandatory retired at age 60. Is that because 60 years old too old? Why not the MP or politician. Double standard!!

@ Disc 1 highlander - actually, if they had competent Ministers, age would not be a factor.

Thaksin is 63. Do you think he will call it quits in 2 more years?

Looks to me that he was willing to join any party as long as he could share the spoils of victory. An equal opportunity flip flopper.

I agree with D1. Politicians should have to retire like everybody else and make room for younger generations.

D2: do you read? He passed away!
