How coward and sick you have to be to commit such action.Really, really sad and shocking that some human beings can be this way...

Khun Meldrew #28, either way, I don't think UBL is no longer with us. So, what's your point?

spiceman: do you really believe UBL is laying at the bottom of the ocean?

Khun Bluebottle #26, the Soviets lost in Afghanistan because of the same reason the US lost in Vietnam. It was part of the proxy Cold War conflicts between the US and the collapsed USSR. Without help from the Soviet, N Vietnam would never have a prayer against the US. The same with Afghanistan without help from the US. Have you seen "Charlie Wilson's War?" Now, without another nuclear superpower helping them, the current Afghan War is winnable if the US wants to, but at what cost, especially, after the Al Qaeda is already heavily decimated with its leader, UBL, laying at the bottom of the ocean.

The Russians failed in Afghanistan now the combined forces have failed in Afghanistan. Do you honestly think aggression is going to solve anything in the south of Thailand especially knowing the man in charge and the past failures by the respective Thai governments.

@discussion 18 - The communist insurgency in Malaya isn't really comparable to the disaster in the far south of Thailand. The communist insurgents in Malaya were almost all Chinese-Malaysians and much easier to isolate.

Khun Djay #22, the terrorists are doing to us what we should have been doing to them, which is to identify, isolate, and neutralize the threat. All the Govt has been doing is to bribe the teachers with more money, which an increasing number of them won't have any chances to spend. It also indicates that their intel gathering is awfully good, while ours is hopelessly bad, and that's why they are winning.

Drones work for the US because they have the luxury of being an ocean or 2 away from where the innocents are dying (as well as some terrorists). The use of these tactics in the South would radicalize the moderate population and play into the hands of the insurgents.
Fact check: the 1st Afghan war was a CIA operation to unify the local warlords to overthrow the Taliban. A good strategy for there and then, but not applicable to anything in Thailand.

Amazing how these terrorists knew she was a teacher. That they just happened to be in the area when she was working late. Just happened to come across her. Amazing...

Disc 19, wakeup: The problem in Southern Thailand, isn't about infrastructure, or socioeconomics. You don't murder people for those types of reasons. The problem in Southern Thailand, is all aobout terrorists wanting to establish a solid foothold in Southern Thailand, and to use that area for expanding terrorists operaitons. The long-term goal of these terrorists, is to take over the Kingdom of Thailand. Do you really believe, terrorists want a peaceful life?
