Tsunami hits Japan after 7.3-magnitude quake

A one-metre-high tsunami hit northeast Japan Friday after a powerful undersea quake struck off the coast, sending thousands fleeing to safety in a region that was devastated in last year's quake-tsunami disaster.
A railway attendant at Tokyo Station uses a loudspeaker to explain the train service situation for the Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train) which connects the capital to northern Japan. All tsunami warnings in Japan were lifted around two hours after a powerful undersea quake sent thousands fleeing to safety, according to local media.
Broadcasters urged residents along the shoreline to remember the 2011 catastrophe and move to higher ground when the initial tremors rocked the region.
