The tribulations of trying to be the cool aunt

One of the biggest joys of being an aunt is that you simply get to hang about when things are dandy with the little ones. Then they start crying, and you just hand them back to their parents. Pack the stuffed animals, wipe your hands and go for a drink.

As an aunt of a darling girl who's almost three years old, I couldn't have been happier with our arrangement. I'm there for the good times and Instagram photos, but I'm thinking my turn to do the tough jobs will come when she hits puberty, and hates her parents. Then I'll be that cool aunt who swoops in to save the day.

Trouble came sooner than I thought, however, when I casually went toy shopping this past weekend. I usually buy her clothes and cute shoes in addition to silly teddy bears, leaving the educational toys for her parents and grandparents.
